Crying Songs (excerpt)

Crying Songs (excerpt) is a multidisciplinary performance work by jaamil, presented at the Performance Mix Festival at HERE Arts Center in New York in 2013.

The work juxtaposes interior and exterior landscapes to create what was described as a confessional identity-mashup, where performance, visual aesthetics, self-revelation, theatricality, and discomfort collide. Part social commentary and part historical self-critique, the piece engages with misogyny and patriarchal constructs while exploring the emotional and political weight carried by the body.
